IGCSE Maths Tutoring in the UAE — Cambridge 0580 and Edexcel 4MA1
There is no such thing as "IGCSE Maths" in the singular. Your child sits either Cambridge 0580 or Edexcel 4MA1, and the two exams are marked differently, tiered differently, and — since 2025 — no longer even agree on whether a calculator is allowed.
A tutor who does not know which code is on the entry form is guessing. We ask first, then teach the paper the student will actually sit.
Cambridge 0580 vs Edexcel 4MA1: what actually differs
Cambridge 0580 — restructured from the 2025 series
Every candidate now sits exactly two papers, split by calculator use:

Core awards the lower grade range and Extended the higher one; the tiers cannot be mixed. 0980 is the same content and the same papers, reported on the 9–1 scale instead — some UAE schools enter students for one, some for the other.
Edexcel 4MA1
Two written papers, Foundation or Higher tier, each 2 hours and each worth 100 marks, graded 9–1. A calculator is permitted in both papers.
One detail specific to the UAE that most tutoring pages miss: Pearson runs regional variants marked with an R. Students in the Emirates usually sit 1HR and 2HR (or 1FR and 2FR at Foundation) rather than the UK versions. Same content, same standard — but a student who has only ever practised UK-labelled papers has not seen their own paper's front cover.
Where marks are actually lost
- The non-calculator paper (0580 only). Roughly half of a 0580 candidate's marks now come from a paper with no calculator at all. Students who have spent four years leaning on one lose marks on arithmetic they genuinely understand. The fix is not revision — it is deliberate drilling of fractions, surds, and leaving answers as exact values rather than rounded decimals.
- Method marks abandoned mid-question. Mark schemes award method as well as answer. Students who cannot finish a question often stop writing and score zero on work that was worth two or three marks.
- Tier mismatch. Students entered for Extended who should be on Core, or the reverse. Either way, marks are lost to a decision made before the exam. We flag this in the assessment and tell you plainly.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find out whether my child sits 0580 or 4MA1?
It is on the exam entry form or the school's exam officer can confirm in a sentence. If you are unsure, send us a photo of the timetable on WhatsApp and we will identify it.
Is the non-calculator paper harder?
Not harder, different. The arithmetic is chosen to be manageable, but the reasoning can be more demanding and answers often need to be left exact rather than rounded. It rewards reliable method, not fast mental arithmetic.
Can we switch from Extended to Core?
That is the school's decision, taken before entry closes. If the assessment suggests the tier is wrong, we will say so early enough for you to raise it — but we cannot change an entry.
Do you use past papers?
Yes, and for Edexcel students in the UAE we use the R-variant papers, which is what they will actually sit.
Is there a guarantee of a grade?
